MEDITATIONS FROM THE MONASTERY

Traditional Encouragement for Today’s Christians.

These discourses were first recorded live,on tape, by the nuns at the Poor Clare Monastery at Much Birch in Herefordshire. They are taken fromover ahundred reflections given there during the Nineties by Canon Paul Chidgey of the Catholic Archdiocese of Cardiff. There is very occasionally a contemporary reference, but the content is timeless and inspiring.

Canon Chidgey, 88, was forced into semi-retirement by ill-health, but had served the people of Cardiff, the Welsh Valleys and Ross-on-Wye for over 60 years. He was never heard to utter a harsh word of criticism from his pulpit, but was unfailingly encouraging and uplifting. He had two particular themes to which he returned frequently: a love of theHoly Sacrifice of the Mass and devotion to Our Blessed Lady…but these are kept for possible future releases.

We have sequenced these four sessions, not as originally given - seasonally and referring to the principal readings of that week - but in relation to our own pilgrimages through life.

They are now arranged as:

1 Our Misson (“Preparing for Pentecost”)

We are chosen for joy and love…

…and to be empowered by the Spirit.

2 Encouragement on the Way (“Emmaus…and after”)

The gentleness of Christ's correction and cajoling…

…and the drawing on of leaders and the led.

3 Comfort for Failures (“First Utterances from the Cross”)

Enemies and sinners are prioritised in His love…

…and the gift to us all of His Mother, Mary.

4 Destined for Heaven (“Four Last Things”)

Be not afraid…

…all these things are being accomplished now.
